A játékok Google-ja?

Orientation for new employees of Zynga, the fast-growing maker of Facebook games like FarmVille and Mafia Wars, can be a heady affair given the company’s outsize ambitions – all of which are embodied in Mark Pincus, Zynga’s founder. „I thought, it’s 2007, and this can’t be all that the Internet is meant to be,” he said. There has to be more than „a garage sale, a bookstore, a search engine and a portal,” he added in a good-natured putdown of the Web giants eBay, Amazon, Google and Yahoo. He said the opportunity to build an online entertainment empire was „like search before Google came along.” The Zynga Game Network is the hottest start-up to emerge from Silicon Valley since Twitter and, before that, Facebook. Unlike Twitter, which has meager revenue, Zynga is on a path to pocket $835 million in revenue this year. While Facebook needed four and a half years to reach 100 million users, Zynga crossed that mark after just two and a half years. Zynga’s empire is made up of cartoonish online games that even Mr. Pincus acknowledges are goofy. And most striking, given its financial success, is the fact that the games are free to everyone. Zynga makes money, by and large, only when a small fraction of its users pay real money for make-believe „virtual” goods that let them move up in the games or to give their friends gifts. For instance, in FarmVille, its most popular game, players tend to virtual farms, planting and harvesting crops, and turning little plots of land into ever more sophisticated or idyllic cyberfarms. Good farmers – those who don’t let crops wither – earn virtual currency they can use for things like more seed or farm animals and equipment. But players can also buy those goods with credit cards, PayPal accounts or Facebook’s new payment system, called Credits. A pink tractor, a FarmVille favorite, costs about $3.50, and fuel to power it is 60 cents. A Breton horse can be had for $4.40, and four chickens for $5.60. The sums are small, but add up quickly when multiplied by millions of users: Zynga says it has been profitable since shortly after its founding. At a recent gathering of media and technology moguls, Jeffrey Katzenberg, the C.E.O. of DreamWorks Animation, was asked what he would do if he were to start his career over. „I said I would like to be Mark Pincus,” he recalled in an interview. „He has nailed the next killer app, the next compelling thing that’s going to happen” in media.

A kaliforniai Willow Garage a világ robotikai kutatásainak egyik fellegvára, fejlesztéseik betekintést engednek a szakterület jövőjébe.

Touted as the first graduation party of its kind, Willow Garage in Menlo Park gave a big sendoff to 11 robots worth more than $4 million. With the song "Mr. Roboto" blaring in the background, the PR2s (Personal Robot 2) shook their bots in front of hundreds of attendees, who later got to touch -- and, in some instances, dance -- with the robots, which have a mobile base and arms that can react to being pushed or pulled. The PR2s will be shipped off to mostly academic institutions around the world, including the University of Tokyo and the University of Freiburg in Germany. Locally, Stanford University and UC Berkeley are recipients of the robots. The program is part of Willow Garage's effort to "get robots out of factories and into the real world," said Steve Cousins, president and CEO of Willow Garage. By "real world," Cousins means homes or other environments where personal robotics can assist in everyday life, such as folding laundry or helping seniors lift heavy objects. Each PR2 comes pre-installed with Willow Garage's free and open-source software platform, ROS. By providing the PR2s to these institutions for free for two years, Willow Garage hopes to accelerate robotics research and development. As a condition of the program, participants will share their research so the robotics community may build on it. Cousins said the startup may sell some robots later this year (Willow Garage also has the Texai telepresence robot), but generating revenues isn't the immediate focus. Rather, the emphasis is on seeding the robotics industry now with the hope of "catching some of the long-term exponential growth," Cousins said. As for when we might see any explosive growth in this industry, Eric Berger, co-director of the personal robotics program, said it's often been said that it's 10 years off. He said he's sticking with that.

IT3 komment: A robotok a gyári alkalmazások mellett a hétköznapok egyre több területén jelennek meg a következő tíz évben. A „személyi robot” kifejezés nem véletlenül rímel a „személyi számítógép”-re… Ezt a jövőképet igyekszik valóra váltani a Willow Garage, amely érdekes együttműködési modellben gondolkodik: nyílt forráskódú fejlesztőplatformjukon több felsőoktatási intézmény besegít, miközben az intézmények két évre ingyen megkapják a robotokat.

Felismerés minden szinten

Amerikai kutatók biológiai modellen, az agyon alapuló „többszörös” felismerő-rendszert fejlesztenek.

Software systems could one day analyze everything from blurry war-zone footage to the subtle sarcasm in a written paragraph, thanks to two unassuming scientists who are inspired by biology to make revolutionary strides in intelligent computing. Yann LeCun and Rob Fergus, both computer science professors at New York University, are the brains behind “Deep Learning,” a program sponsored by Darpa. The idea, ultimately, is to develop code that can teach itself to spot objects in a picture, actions in a video, or voices in a crowd. Existing software programs rely heavily on human assistance to identify objects. A user extracts key feature sets, like edge statistics and then feeds the data into a running algorithm, which uses the feature sets to recognize the visual input. LeCun said, “There’s some sort of learning algorithm within the brain. We just don’t know what it is.” But the algorithmic talents of the mind, along with its ability to identify visual data by abstraction, will be the key components of the NYU team’s new system. Right now, an algorithm recognizes objects in one of two ways. In one, it is shown some representative examples of what, say, a horse looks like. Then the code tries to match any new creature to the ur-stallion. (That’s called “supervised” learning.) In the other way, the software is shown lots and lots of horses, and it builds its own model of what a horse is supposed to resemble. (That’s “unsupervised” learning.) What LeCun and Fergus are trying to do is make code that can get it right on a first, unsupervised example — using layer after layer of code to abstract the essential attributes of an object. And this is only the beginning. Darpa also wants a system that can spot activities, like running, jumping or getting out of a car. The final version will operate unsupervised, by being programmed to hold itself accountable for errors — and then auto-correct them at each algorithmic layer. It should also be able to apply the layered algorithmic technique to text. Right now, computer systems can parse sentences to categorize them as positive or negative, based on how often different words appear in the text. By applying layers of analysis, the Deep Learning machine will — LeCun and Fergus hope — spot sarcasm and irony too.

IT3 komment: A használatban és fejlesztési stádiumban lévő felismerő-rendszerek általában egy területen tevékenykednek: kép, hang/beszéd, szöveg stb. A DARPA által szponzorált „Mély tanulás” program keretében két kutató önmagától tanuló különleges képfelismerő algoritmuson dolgozik, amit a későbbiekben hangok, szöveg stb. azonosítását is elvégezné.

Szemantikus paletta

Szemantikus technológiákon, web 2.0-án alapuló új megoldásokkal igyekszik érdekesebbé, közösségibbé tenni az oktatást egy uniós projekt.

A student taking an oral examination can be filmed and their performance ‘marked’ with written, sound or visual comments using a multimedia tool called LimSee3. The resulting multimedia document can be shared so that other teachers and examiners can develop consistent approaches to marking. This innovative tool is just one of a series developed during the Europe-wide Palette project to help ‘communities of practice’, such as teachers. Communities of practice are disparate groups of people – usually professionals – who strive to define, shape, share and manage a body of knowledge. “There are many online collaboration tools, but most of them are oriented towards enterprises, not communities,” explains Christine Vanoirbeek who coordinated the researchers in Palette. Many of the Palette tools exploit the advantages of Web 2.0 social networking technologies or the powerful document-searching capabilities of the semantic web. The eLogbook Web 2.0 social software is a tool for collaboration and learning in communities of practice. eLogbook offers community members a networking and communication platform, a repository for sharing and managing resources, a task and activity management system, as well as a community structuring tool allowing the definition of roles and distribution of tasks. eLogbook also provides different types of notifications (via email, or RSS feeds) in order to motivate contribution and sustain collaboration. Palette’s CoPe_it! tool creates online personal or collaborative workspaces. Users can share ideas and comments or add multimedia documents. The created content can be shifted about and reorganised by the users – even users with little experience. The idea is to enable discussion and collaboration, creating something new from collaboration within the workspace. Another tool, Sweet-Wiki combines the easy interaction of a wiki with the power of the semantic web. A wiki is a website which makes creating and editing any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser much easier. Palette also developed a Service Portal, distributed under the name myWiWall. The portal comprises multiple widgets giving access to different Palette services available to a community of practice from a web-browser window.

IT3 komment: A tudás közös megszerzése a tanulás egyik olyan fontos módja, amely az IKT eszközös alkalmazása következtében minden bizonnyal előtérbe fog kerülni az egyéni felkészüléssel szemben az elkövetkező évtizedekben. A PALETTE projekt egyike azon kuatásoknak, amelyben ennek műszaki lehetőségeit vizsgálták.

Pozitív hatással lesznek a hétköznapokra.

Computer engineers have long wanted to copy the compact power of biological brains. But the best mimics so far have been impractical, being simulations running on supercomputers. Steve Furber, a computer scientist at the University of Manchester, UK, says that if we want to use computers with even a fraction of a brain's flexibility, we need to start with affordable, practical, low-power components. "We're using bog-standard, off-the-shelf processors of fairly modest performance," he says. Furber won't come close to copying every property of real neurons, says Henry Markram, head of Blue Brain. This is IBM's attempt to simulate a brain with unsurpassed accuracy on a Blue Gene supercomputer at the Swiss Institute for Technology, Lausanne. "It's a worthy aim, but brain-inspired chips can only produce brain-like functions," he says. That's good enough for Furber, who wants to start teaching his brain-like computer about the world as soon as possible. His first goal is to teach it how to control a robotic arm, before working towards a design to control a humanoid. A robot controller with even a dash of brain-like properties should be much better at tasks like image recognition, navigation and decision-making, says Furber. "Robots offer a natural, sensory environment for testing brain-like computers," says Furber. "You can instantly tell if it is being useful." Called Spinnaker - for Spiking Neural Network Architecture - the brain is based on a processor created in 1987 by Furber and colleagues at Acorn Computers in Cambridge, UK, makers of the seminal BBC Microcomputer. Although the chip was made for a follow-up computer that flopped, the ARM design at its heart lived on, becoming the most common "embedded" processor in devices like e-book readers and smartphones. But coaxing any computer into behaving like a brain is tough. Both real neurons and computer circuits communicate using electrical signals, but in biology the "wires" carrying them do not have fixed roles as in electronics. The importance of a particular neural connection, or synapse, varies as the network learns by balancing the influence of the different signals being received. This synaptic "weighting" must be dynamic in a silicon brain, too.

Researchers at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid’s Facultad de Informática have developed a model for 3D virtual learning environments based on an autonomous virtual tutor that detects collaboration. There are two sides to collaborative learning: collaborating to learn and learning to collaborate. For this reason, learners may require guidance on both how to perform a task and on questions concerning collaboration. The proposed model is based on analysing non-verbal communication about collaborative interaction that takes place while a task is performed. An avatar personifies the tutor in the learning process, which materializes in the visual framework provided by virtual environments, thereby supporting the collaboration process. The model proposes a schema that identifies what non-verbal communication signals are likely to be useful for this purpose, and how to measure and relate these signals to particular effective collaborative learning indicators. During the research, the tutor was implemented in a prototype application running on Maevif, a platform for developing intelligent multi-user virtual environments for education and entertainment. The autonomous tutoring agent used text messages to give advice to learners as they completed the set task, which involved handling objects. The messages were activated when learners were diagnosed as not having satisfactorily attained the indicators of effective collaborative learning. The application validated the feasibility of the model. Part of the research focused on developing guidelines for relating effective collaborative learning indicators to particular non-verbal communication signals that can be automatically gathered from the virtual collaborative environment. Although the model was initially defined for a collaborative learning environment, there is no reason why it should not be adapted to monitor other types of activities based in virtual environments, such as training or virtual meetings, but other indicators would have to be investigated in this case. The methodology was developed and applied throughout the research. Exploratory studies were conducted to empirically check if not all then some of what were considered to be the most representative possibilities.

IT3 komment: A közeljövő oktatásának/tanulásának egyik nagy lehetősége a 3D-s virtuális környezetek használata. Jelen kezdeményezés érdekessége, hogy a tanulók együttműködésé, nem-verbális kommunikációjukat – avatár formájában megjelenített – virtuális oktató követi nyomon.

Felhők Európa felett

Biztonságos felhőszámítástechnikát szorgalmaz az Európai Unió.

Cloud computing, wireless networks and supply chain integrity should be key areas of focus for IT security research in the next few years, according to a new report from the European Union security agency Enisa. The study, Priorities for Research on Current and Emerging Network Technologies, was produced as part of Enisa's ongoing research into how information security can support the new digital agenda for Europe and the wider Europe 2020 strategy. The report highlights five key areas which Enisa believes "present the greatest need for research within a window of three to five years". These are cloud computing, real-time detection and diagnosis systems, future wireless networks, sensor networks and supply chain integrity. Enisa argued that cloud computing research needs to be focused on policy and law enforcement challenges, as well as technical issues. "Cloud computing models can benefit greatly from the international harmonisation of data protection, retention and privacy regulations," the report noted. "Research is also needed to better understand the best practices and policies that will facilitate effective incident handling." Guidelines and standards must be developed to allow "meaningful and unambiguous evaluation and certification of the assurance of cloud-based services", the report continued. Enisa also recommended that research on wireless network security should focus on the requirements for resilience, and on "network mechanisms and intrusion detection and recovery mechanisms".

IT3 komment: A felhőszámítástechnika eredményeként újfajta biztonsági kockázatok jelentek meg. A Web 2.0-s alkalmazások gyors elterjedését az alkalmazások használatában rejlő gezdaságossági előnyök segítik. A további térhódításuknak komoly akadálya lehet a biztonság hiánya. A biztonsági problémák megoldása jelentheti a továbblépést a Web 2.0-ról a Web 3.0 felé.

Jövendőmondó

A Google legújabb befektetése jövőbeli események adatelemzésen alapuló előrejelzését célozza.

Google has invested in a startup company that claims to be able to predict the future. The company's investment arm, Google Ventures, has sunk an undisclosed sum into Recorded Future, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based startup that "offers customers new ways to analyze the past, present and the predicted future," according to a new Google Ventures Web site. Recorded Future's own Web site doesn't list any products for sale, but the company appears to have developed a data analytics technology that could be used to try to predict future stock market events or even terrorist activity, according to blog posts and videos on its site. The technology looks at how frequently an entity or event is referred to in the news and around the Web over a period of time, then uses that data to project how it might behave in the future. "At Recorded Future, we compute a momentum value for each entity and event in our database," one blog post explains. "The momentum value indicates how interesting a certain event or entity is at a particular time, and is continuously updated. In computing the momentum value, we take into account the volume of news around an entity or event, as well as what sources it is mentioned in, what other events and entities it is mentioned together with, and several other factors. "The momentum measure is used to present the most relevant query results in our web user interface, but it can also be analyzed using statistical methods to predict possible future changes in momentum, which in turn can be valuable, e.g. for trading decisions." The startup has claimed its customers include "some of the top government agencies and trading firms in the world," according to a February profile in The Boston Globe. It's one of several companies to receive investments from Google Ventures, which just turned one year old. Google is expanding the investment arm and plans to put US$100 million into startups this year.

A cyberháború fenyegető árnya

Few events have crystallized U.S. fears over a cyber catastrophe, or brought on calls for a strategic response, more than the recent attacks against Google and more than 30 other tech firms. The company's disclosure in January that it was attacked by China-based hackers -- and its subsequent decision to scale back operations there -- have stoked long-standing fears over the ability of cyber adversaries to penetrate commercial and government networks in the U.S. f a full-fledged cyberwar were to break out, the nation's economy would be hit hard. Banks might not be able function, electricity, water and other utilities could be shut off, air travel would almost certainly be disrupted, and communications would be spotty at best -- in a word, chaos. Few think that such a war is imminent. But damage has already been done by a slew of cyberattacks that, while well short of cyberwar, have still resulted in the theft of terabytes of intellectual property data, trade secrets and classified military and government information. That information is now in the hands of overseas groups, many of which are thought to be state-sponsored. It's not just data and secrets. Cyberthieves have also made off with billions of dollars from U.S companies and banks, and there are growing concerns that cyberattackers are making subtle changes to software source code. That way, they can create permanent windows into a company's operations for future mischief. Many see the attacks as evidence that the U.S. is already in the midst of an undeclared cyberwar, with attacks against government targets estimated to have more than doubled in the past two years. A top FBI official called cyberattacks an "existential threat" to the U.S. On Friday, two U.S. senators now pushing cybersecurity legislation in Congress reiterated those sentiments. And Mike McConnell the former director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and director of national intelligence during the Bush administration, recently said in a Washington Post column that the U.S is not only fighting such a war, it's also losing the battle. That sentiment was echoed by U.S. Navy Admiral Robert Willard. who warned Congress about U.S military and government networks bing hit by attacks that appeared to originate from China. The attacks are challenging the military's ability to "operate freely in the cyber commons," he said.

Az adatközpontok energia-hatékony működése a zöld IT sikerének egyik feltétele. Komoly előrelépés, hogy nemzetközi szinten sikerült megegyezni a hatékonyság mértékegységéről.

Industry groups and government agencies from the U.S., Europe and Japan have reached a basic agreement on how to measure the energy efficiency of data centers. The agreement is seen as significant because it establishes a common metric that different types of data centers, in different parts of the world, can use to report their level of energy efficiency. That could provide a yardstick for companies to assess the efficiency of their own data centers, and also to gauge the effectiveness of energy-saving techniques employed by other facilities. The agreement is unusual for its level of international cooperation. Orchestrated by the Green Grid, an industry consortium in the U.S., the agreement is backed by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the European Union Code of Conduct and the Japan Ministry of Economy, according to a statement from the Green Grid. "The Green Grid is working with organizations around the world to develop a clear and well-defined language for the way we communicate about energy efficiency metrics, which will give us a common measuring stick for all data centers regardless of their location," said Tom Brey, an IBM employee who is secretary of The Green Grid, in a statement. "With that type of consistency, we can start driving behavioral changes in the industry." The participants have agreed to adopt Power Usage Effectiveness, or PUE, as their "preferred energy efficiency metric," the statement says. PUE, which was developed by the Green Grid, divides the total energy consumed by a data center by the amount of energy used to power the IT equipment. The result shows how much energy is being lost to mechanical and electrical systems. The choice of PUE is no surprise. It has emerged as the most popular metric for measuring data center efficiency, and some large companies, notably Microsoft and Google, have been publishing PUE numbers as a way to show off the efficiency of their newest facilities. But there is no standard method for calculating PUE, and the groups participating in the agreement still have some work to do, in defining how the total energy consumed by a data center should be measured, for example. They are also expected to develop and define further efficiency metrics.

IT3 komment: A felhő számítástechnika alapinfrastruktúráját a nagy adatközpontok adják.

Recently, 895 Web experts and users were asked by the Pew Research Center and the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University in North Carolina to assess predictions about technology and its effects on society in the year 2020. There’s a broad feeling among technologists that technology itself is going to improve, come what may. That computing power, bandwidth, storage capacity, even our ability to pack pixels into screens, is going to keep improving. At the same time, there is worry that humans and their institutions will not adapt as well as they might under these circumstances. We’re slow to adjust, and the technologies themselves are introducing so many new elements to life that people will potentially have a hard time adjusting to that. There’s a sense that people are marching not necessarily blindly, but certainly without full knowledge, into a future that they don’t fully know. They’re thrilled with their gadgets but they don’t know what their gadgets are doing to them. Anonymity will be harder to maintain. There are too many threats that are posed by people being allowed to do anything they want without any level of accountability or authentication. There will still be chances for anonymous encounters, but they will be in special environments in special ways. The Web is shifting the needs that we have in our lives and the functions that we can perform, so there will be some cognitive shifting that goes on. We don’t have to remember as much stuff, for example, so there might be a shift in cognitive abilities over time from less memorization and storage. New literacies will be required such as screen literacy. There’s almost a uniform feeling that health care will get better. Mobile technology and wearable devices will be able to give real-time feedback about people’s health status. The education story is a different one. There’s hope that education will change, but some despair that it’s not changing fast enough. Kids are still being taught largely in the same format and environment that their great-grandparents were — with students of the same age sitting in a classroom riveted on the all-knowing teacher. Technologists think that that model will break down at some point and a very different set of activities will define formal education.

Virtuális világ a Szingapúri Ifjúsági Olimpiára

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and Singapore Youth Olympics Games Organising Committee have announced the launch of the Singapore 2010 Odyssey, a new virtual world centered around the upcoming 2010 Youth Olympics. The games aren't until the end of the summer, but the project has been in the works for a while. Singapore issued a tender for bids on the project in March 2009. According to the site, the ultimate winner of the project was a consortium led by ST Electronics (Training & Simulation) Pte Ltd. The free-to-play downloadable, 3D world is aimed at youths around the world and features a futuristic setting looking back at the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. It provides an Olympic-themed world with games, social networking, and education. Activities are based on the 26 Olympic sports as well as the overall values the Olympics strive to promote. One interesting feature is that many of the games are multi-player competitions organized as in-world events. Rather than rankings based on general points, though those are possible, users will compete together in events like archery, hurdles, and swimming. Users also have the opportunity to design their own 3D content. Singapore 2010 Odyssey is pushing that program specifically through schools. So far students from NUS High, Nan Hua Secondary, and Hai Sing Catholic have piloted the program to create in-world content, but it will be rolled out to other schools in the coming months. Currently Singapore 2010 Odyssey is only available for PCs, but the FAQ says the consortium hopes to launch a Mac version soon. The world has been in a closed beta since October 2009.

A quantum computer could provide an enormous improvement in the processing speed of existing computers. However, as yet they only exist in the laboratory in the form of small prototypes with a capacity of a few bits. They can now be explored in more detail, at least in simulations. The Jülich supercomputer JUGENE can now simulate the largest quantum computer system in the world with 42 bits. "The computing power of a quantum computer grows exponentially with its size," says Prof. Dr. Kristel Michielsen from the Jülich Supercomputing Centre. "This is both an enormous opportunity for future applications and also a great challenge for simulations at the moment." If a quantum computer is expanded by just one single computer bit then its computing power is immediately doubled due to the laws of quantum mechanics on which it is based. The computing power of a classical computer only grows linearly with its components. Ten percent more transistors (in the ideal case) also only means ten percent more performance. If you want to simulate a quantum computer using present computing power then you soon come up against limits. For a quantum computer with 42 computer bits you need machines like the Jülich supercomputer JUGENE, which is the fastest computer in Europe with almost 300,000 processors and a computing power of 1015 floating point operations per second. Shor's algorithm, a common test application for quantum computers, has been demonstrated on the 42-bit quantum computer, factorizing 15707 into 113x139. This is a number that is thousands of times larger than those factorized on quantum computers that have been experimentally realized in the past. For the world record, the Jülich research team and the Computational Physics group of the University of Groningen developed the simulation software to such a level that it can run efficiently on this large number of processors. "If so many processors have to work together then in the case of simple algorithms it can easily happen that processors are waiting for each other and thus performance is lost," says Michielsen. "Our software is optimized so that thousands of processors can work seamlessly together. It scales almost perfectly."

IT3 komment: A bemutatott kutatás jól példázza, hogy mekkora számítási teljesítmény növekedés várható a quantum számítógépektől. Egyetlen 42 qubit-es quantum processzor 300,000 jelenlegi elektronikus processzor teljesítményével ér fel. Ugyanakkor drasztikus növekedést hozhatnak a quantum processzorok a számítási sebesség tekintetében is, hiszen a német kutatók által összeállított szimuláció messze a majdani quantum processzorok sebessége alatt működik.

AR-kutyák

A 3D-s bővített valóság megjelenik a sajtótermékekben is.

The VTT Technical Research Center of Finland has been developing augmented reality (AR) technology, which superimposes digital information in the user's view, and uses real-time video images and three-dimensional (3-D) virtual objects. In the case of Dibidogs, animated puppies created by Finnish and Chinese children, the user is viewing a magazine via a webcam and PC display. An animated Dibidog called Viki will appear on top of a marker on a page. The 3D character will act and react in different ways based on the movement of the webcam, e.g., by jumping, rolling and growling. The likeable puppy will always look at the camera which creates the impression that it knows that the user is there. A marker printed on a magazine can be copied and enlarged on a piece of paper which enables the user to play and interact with the Dibidog in a larger space. To use the application, the user needs to have a Windows PC which is suitable for 3D games and has a webcam. The user downloads the application from the URL specified on the magazine and installs it with a few clicks of the mouse. “International magazines have already used some AR elements previously, but they have typically been based on 2D video image. What makes Dibidogs unique is the use of animated 3D computer graphics and, in particular, the interaction between the user and the 3D character,” says Research Professor Charles Woodward from VTT. VTT focuses on applying AR technologies to areas such as interior design, construction, industrial applications and virtual video meetings. The next AR application developed by them will bring Dibidogs and other content to camera phones at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai in May. “AR technology completely transforms the reading experience. We want to be the first Finnish magazine to provide our readers with the AR experience and provide unique experiences for our readers as well as to improve the interaction with our readers and partners. The reading experience gains a completely new dimension when the 3D puppy becomes alive with the use of a webcam and reacts whenever the user moves the magazine or the camera,” says Social District Officer Jarno Alastalo, Aller Media Oy. Aller Media plans to continue the use of AR and to experiment with different content, such as people walking on the pages of the magazine.

Your cooperative dashboard flashes a warning: “Emergency vehicle crossing at the next intersection!” You start slowing down. On cue, the lights on your route turn red, simultaneously turning green for a fire engine crossing at the intersection. That fire engine will surf a ‘wave’ of green lights all the way to the blaze further downtown. As the lights turn green, your display suggests a diversion that will skirt the scene of the accident, avoiding any risk of congestion. You take the suggested turn and your car advises you of a new speed limit. You slow down and gain some extra 'green miles', bonus points awarded to careful drivers, redeemable against a range of privileges, such as driving in the city centre without charge, or using bus lanes outside rush hour. The day started more or less as any other. Your mobile phone woke you a little earlier than usual because heavy rain meant traffic was less fluid than usual: the SafeRoute service you subscribe to estimated a 10-minute delay in your normal commute and so sent your mobile an earlier alarm. Now you are glad for the early start; an unhurried drive is a happy one. As you make the final turn on the way to work, your cooperative co-pilot reads a message from the car behind you. It’s your colleague, asking if you have time for coffee. Thanks to all the cooperative vehicle-infrastructure systems (CVIS), you are early for work so you catch a quick coffee with your friend. This is a future without road rage, a future of cooperative drivers using cooperative vehicle infrastructure systems. It is the vision of the CVIS project, which is itself part of a broader trend internationally with a focus on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The USA, Japan and Europe are all thinking of cooperative systems like this, according to Paul Kompfner, Head of Sector, Cooperative Mobility at ERTICO – ITS Europe and coordinator of the CVIS project. “On every continent, part of the spectrum has been reserved for cooperative systems, 5.9 GHz in the States and Europe, and 5.8 GHz in Japan, so this subset of ITS is certainly coming. Right now, I’d say Europe has something of a lead in technology development and validation across a wide range of test sites,” suggests Kompfner.

A videókommunikáció terjedésével hatékonyabbá válnak a telejelenlét-megoldások.

A kommunikációs alapokról, működésükről a végfelhasználó számára is átlátható szoftver gondoskodna. A Fraunhofer Intézet fejlesztési stádiumban lévő audió kommunikációs motorja valósidőben, hifi hangminőségben fog működni, ami bizony komoly előrelépés a jelenlegi internetes telefonok remegő képeihez, visszhangjaihoz képest. A kamerákat a háttérben működő mesterséges intelligencia irányítja a beszélő személyre, a játék soron következő mozzanatára stb.

First we sent data through wires, then the air, now the human body is becoming a communications conduit. Researchers at Korea University in Seoul have transmitted data at a rate of 10 megabits per second through a person's arm, between two electrodes placed on their skin 30 centimetres apart. The thin, flexible electrodes use significantly less energy than a wireless link like Bluetooth. That's because low-frequency electromagnetic waves pass through skin with little attenuation, a route that also shelters them from outside interference.
Rather than wiring people directly to the internet, the team see health benefits for their technology. It is difficult to monitor vital signs, such as blood sugar and electrical activity of the heart, in a person going about their everyday lives because it means either covering them in snaking wires connected to a recording device, or using wireless transmission. "If we use wireless for each of these vital signs we would need many batteries," says study co-author Sang-Hoon Lee of Korea University in Seoul. A network transmitting through the skin would cut energy needs by roughly 90 per cent, he says. A communications link that worked in this way was first demonstrated in 2005 by researchers at the University of Tokyo in Japan. But the electrodes used were large, rigid and made of silver chloride, which can cause skin irritation if kept in place for long periods of time. Lee and colleagues coated a metal electrode with a flexible silicon-rich polymer and made sure it was skin safe by asking volunteers to wear an electrode on their shoulder, or behind their ear for a week. They also carried out cytotoxicity tests using human cell cultures. The entire device is 300 micrometres thick – about the width of three human hairs – and withstood tests in which it was bent to a 90-degree angle 700,000 times. The Korean team are working with a large electronics manufacturer to develop health-monitoring networks using the new electrodes. Lee says future versions could even be embedded beneath the skin for long-term monitoring applications, such as electrocardiography (ECG) or electroencephalography (EEG).

IT3 komment: Az IKT implantátumok elterjedésének egyik korlátja a testbarát anyagok hiánya.

Siker esetén, a márciusban indult és négy évesre tervezett AMARSi (Adaptív moduláris architektúra gazdag motorikus adottságokhoz) projekt résztvevői megelégedettséggel nyugtázhatják: a gyártás világa tele lesz munkatársaiktól interakció során újabb adottságokat elleső, elsajátító intelligens, autonóm humanoid dolgozó botokkal.

IT3 komment: A biológiailag inspirált számítástudomány jegyében, európai kutatók – elsőként a világon – a jelenlegi robotoknál összetettebb viselkedésformák elsajátítását eredményező motorikus adottságokhoz fejlesztenek architektúrát.
