3d-s tanulási környezet

Virtuális környezetek és tanulás/oktatás összekapcsolódását újabb, ezúttal spanyol kezdeményezés szemlélteti.

Researchers at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid’s Facultad de Informática have developed a model for 3D virtual learning environments based on an autonomous virtual tutor that detects collaboration. There are two sides to collaborative learning: collaborating to learn and learning to collaborate. For this reason, learners may require guidance on both how to perform a task and on questions concerning collaboration. The proposed model is based on analysing non-verbal communication about collaborative interaction that takes place while a task is performed. An avatar personifies the tutor in the learning process, which materializes in the visual framework provided by virtual environments, thereby supporting the collaboration process. The model proposes a schema that identifies what non-verbal communication signals are likely to be useful for this purpose, and how to measure and relate these signals to particular effective collaborative learning indicators. During the research, the tutor was implemented in a prototype application running on Maevif, a platform for developing intelligent multi-user virtual environments for education and entertainment. The autonomous tutoring agent used text messages to give advice to learners as they completed the set task, which involved handling objects. The messages were activated when learners were diagnosed as not having satisfactorily attained the indicators of effective collaborative learning. The application validated the feasibility of the model. Part of the research focused on developing guidelines for relating effective collaborative learning indicators to particular non-verbal communication signals that can be automatically gathered from the virtual collaborative environment. Although the model was initially defined for a collaborative learning environment, there is no reason why it should not be adapted to monitor other types of activities based in virtual environments, such as training or virtual meetings, but other indicators would have to be investigated in this case. The methodology was developed and applied throughout the research. Exploratory studies were conducted to empirically check if not all then some of what were considered to be the most representative possibilities.

IT3 komment: A közeljövő oktatásának/tanulásának egyik nagy lehetősége a 3D-s virtuális környezetek használata. Jelen kezdeményezés érdekessége, hogy a tanulók együttműködésé, nem-verbális kommunikációjukat – avatár formájában megjelenített – virtuális oktató követi nyomon.

Felhők Európa felett

Biztonságos felhőszámítástechnikát szorgalmaz az Európai Unió.

Cloud computing, wireless networks and supply chain integrity should be key areas of focus for IT security research in the next few years, according to a new report from the European Union security agency Enisa. The study, Priorities for Research on Current and Emerging Network Technologies, was produced as part of Enisa's ongoing research into how information security can support the new digital agenda for Europe and the wider Europe 2020 strategy. The report highlights five key areas which Enisa believes "present the greatest need for research within a window of three to five years". These are cloud computing, real-time detection and diagnosis systems, future wireless networks, sensor networks and supply chain integrity. Enisa argued that cloud computing research needs to be focused on policy and law enforcement challenges, as well as technical issues. "Cloud computing models can benefit greatly from the international harmonisation of data protection, retention and privacy regulations," the report noted. "Research is also needed to better understand the best practices and policies that will facilitate effective incident handling." Guidelines and standards must be developed to allow "meaningful and unambiguous evaluation and certification of the assurance of cloud-based services", the report continued. Enisa also recommended that research on wireless network security should focus on the requirements for resilience, and on "network mechanisms and intrusion detection and recovery mechanisms".

IT3 komment: A felhőszámítástechnika eredményeként újfajta biztonsági kockázatok jelentek meg. A Web 2.0-s alkalmazások gyors elterjedését az alkalmazások használatában rejlő gezdaságossági előnyök segítik. A további térhódításuknak komoly akadálya lehet a biztonság hiánya. A biztonsági problémák megoldása jelentheti a továbblépést a Web 2.0-ról a Web 3.0 felé.

Jövendőmondó

A Google legújabb befektetése jövőbeli események adatelemzésen alapuló előrejelzését célozza.

Google has invested in a startup company that claims to be able to predict the future. The company's investment arm, Google Ventures, has sunk an undisclosed sum into Recorded Future, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based startup that "offers customers new ways to analyze the past, present and the predicted future," according to a new Google Ventures Web site. Recorded Future's own Web site doesn't list any products for sale, but the company appears to have developed a data analytics technology that could be used to try to predict future stock market events or even terrorist activity, according to blog posts and videos on its site. The technology looks at how frequently an entity or event is referred to in the news and around the Web over a period of time, then uses that data to project how it might behave in the future. "At Recorded Future, we compute a momentum value for each entity and event in our database," one blog post explains. "The momentum value indicates how interesting a certain event or entity is at a particular time, and is continuously updated. In computing the momentum value, we take into account the volume of news around an entity or event, as well as what sources it is mentioned in, what other events and entities it is mentioned together with, and several other factors. "The momentum measure is used to present the most relevant query results in our web user interface, but it can also be analyzed using statistical methods to predict possible future changes in momentum, which in turn can be valuable, e.g. for trading decisions." The startup has claimed its customers include "some of the top government agencies and trading firms in the world," according to a February profile in The Boston Globe. It's one of several companies to receive investments from Google Ventures, which just turned one year old. Google is expanding the investment arm and plans to put US$100 million into startups this year.

IT3 komment: A jövő előrejelzése ugyan bonyolult tevékenység, amelyet szerencsére egyre több és megbízhatóbb (statisztikai, nyelvelemző stb.) informatikai módszer áll rendelkezésünkre. Entitások (például a tőzsde), események (például terroristatámadás) jövőbeli tevékenységét, megvalósulását egy adott periódusban rávonatkozó hírek feltűnően nagy vagy csekély mennyisége alapján is prognosztizálhatjuk. A Google legalábbis bízik benne, máskülönben nem támogatna egy, ezzel a kutatási területtel foglalkozó új céget.
